Mr. Jayden Laurick received his first Stillwater Fire Department badge from Stillwater as the newest recruit to Stillwater Fire Department, officially recognized at a Pinning Ceremony on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m., September 6, at Fire Station #1.
Chief Terry Essary welcomed all in attendance, including City Councilor Kevin Clark, City Manager Kimberly Meek, City HR Director Christy Driskel, and Police Chief Shannon Jordan.
"The fire service has many traditions that convey our values, and they are an integral part of who we are," said Chief Essary.
Chief Essary talked about the history of the badge and its emblems.
"Our badge's origin begins with the Knights of St. John, also known as the Knights of Malta. They were known for their bravery, dedication, and their reputation for caring for all people in need no matter their beliefs or their background."
The original Maltese Cross is made up of four arrows that meet at the center. Each arrowhead has two points, each representing the values of perseverance, loyalty, skill, precision, observation, tact, sympathy, and gallantry.
"The badge that we wear has changed over the course of time, but those values remain," said Chief Essary.
Essary stressed the unique position and public trust placed in a firefighter.
"By our very nature as firefighters, residents invite us into their homes during the absolute worst day of their lives, knowing that we are there simply to make things better."
Assistant Chief Halcomb then recited the oath of office to Mr. Laurick. His parents, James and Tammy Laurick, were then invited to come forward while his father, James, pinned his badge on.
