Model Aviation is a fun, relaxing, and educational activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. Youth can learn about flight, mechanical design, electronics, and aerodynamics, and the hobby can lead to an enjoyable and rewarding career in full scale aviation. We are celebrating Stillwater Model Aviation Day so that we may spread the word about this great hobby. The Stillwater Radio Control Flyers is a Chartered Club of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Capt. Robert L. “Hoot” Gibson, USN (Ret) states “Look at what I can do with math, look at what I can do with physics.” And one of the ways that we need to make that happen is by showing young people just how neat model airplanes are.”
As a Navy fighter pilot, and a life-long member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, Gibson flew combat in Southeast Asia, graduated from “Top Gun,”
and served as a flight test pilot before joining NASA’s astronaut corps in 1978. He flew five Shuttle missions (four as Commander) and participated on the Challenger accident investigation team. Also an aeronautical engineer, record-setting pilot and air racer, Capt. Gibson has logged over 14,000 hours in over 130 types of aircraft.

The Stillwater Radio Control Flyers is a model airplane club that has been in existence in the Stillwater area for well over 50 years. Members enjoy flying radio control airplanes, drones, helicopters, and gliders. Several of our past members have gone on to have careers in aviation as commercial pilots, engineers, educators, and business owners. We celebrate their accomplishments and the opportunities the hobby provides for the youth of Oklahoma.
