Members of a new book club held their first meeting on Tuesday evening, February 27th, at the home of Mrs. Amber Cheever. 11 club members attended.
Homemade sourdough bread, popcorn, and triple-chunk chocolate Levain-style cookies were served. Chelsey Van der Merwe helped by reading the recipe aloud, enabling Amber to finish the cookies while tending to her hungry baby girl, Gemma.
After the refreshments and getting to know each other, Amber convened the discussion of the book they finished reading "The Forged Coupon" by Leo Tolstoy. Seated in a circle in the living room, the group discussed our often unseen effects on people's lives and what degree of responsibility we have for other's decisions.
Amber and her friends Cassie Denison and Chelsey Van der Merwe created the book club to get women together to discuss great ideas from great books.
"Everyone was smiling and excited. It was nice to talk about something other than our kids," Amber said.
After the event, one of the club members, Kylee Harper, said:
"It has been a long time since I have had an intellectually stimulating conversation."
Each member weighed in on what kind of literature the club would read. A proposition for a 50-year or older criterion was proposed, but the majority rule favored each member taking turns choosing.
The next meeting is planned for late April. Chelsey Van der Merwe has chosen Daniel James Brown's "Boys in the Boat" as the reading.
